Women may have better verbal memory skills than men even when their brains show the same level of problems metabolizing glucose, which occurs in people with Alzheimer's disease, according to research published in the October 5, 2016, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology."Women perform better than men on tests of verbal memory throughout life, which may give them a buffer of protection against losing their verbal memory skills in the precursor stages of Alzheimer's disease, known as mild cognitive impairment," said study author Erin E. Sundermann, PhD, of the University of California, San Diego, who conducted the research while at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY."This is especially important because verbal memory tests are used to diagnose people with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment, so women may not be diagnosed until they are further along in the disease."The study included people from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative: 254 people with Alzheimer's disease, 672 people with mild cognitive impairment that included memory problems and 390 people with no thinking or memory problems.

NEW YORK, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Columbia University scientists say they have identified 41 master regulator genes that may cause gum disease in a first-of-its-kind study.Gum disease, or periodontitis, is an inflammation of tissue surrounding the teeth as a result of an infection from microorganisms. If left untreated, the disease can result to the loosening or even the loss of teeth.Researchers say uncovering the genes responsible for developing the disease is a critical step toward preventing its effects.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Researchers at the Medical Research Council in Britain have discovered it may be possible to test patients for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease using urine samples.Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, or CJD, is a rare degenerative brain disorder that affects approximately 1 in every 1 million people globally. The illness is characterized by diminished memory, behavioral changes, and hallucinations. The National Institutes of Health estimates 90 percent of all individuals who contract CJD die within one year.
