Mao Kobayashi: Japanese cancer blogger dies at 34

Mao Kobayashi, who was named one of the BBC's 100 Women in 2016, died late on Thursday at home in Tokyo, aged 34. Ms Kobayashi's blog was ground-breaking in a country where people do not like to discuss personal issues. Her husband, famous kabuki actor Ebizo Ichikawa, said in his own blog it was "the day I cried most in my life". In June 2016, Ebizo announced that Kobayashi had breast cancer, and in September Kobayashi began to write about her struggle with the disease on her blog. In autumn 2006, Kobayashi became a presenter for the "NEWS ZERO" program on Nippon Television Network. A native of Niigata Prefecture, Kobayashi made her debut as a weathercaster on Fuji TV program "Mezamashi Doyobi" in 2003 while she was a student at Sophia University. Her son Kangen Horikoshi made his first appearance on stage in November 2015.
