At least 21,000 patients who have had heart or lung transplant surgeries in B.C.in the last five years are being warned of the risk of infection.The warning from B.C.'s cardiac centres comes after Health Canada found a low infection risk with a machine used in heart-lung bypass surgeries to warm and cool blood during the procedures.

patients who have had heart surgery or heart or lung transplants in the last five years are being warned about a possible risk of infection.The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) is warning patients who've had open-chest surgery after a bacteria was found in the heater-cooler devices used for the procedure.Health Canada says the bacteria is typically not harmful but in some cases, it may cause serious and potentially life-threatening infections in patients.

Just over 20,000 heart or lung surgery patients across B.C.are being told they may have been exposed to a rare but risky bacteria during operations in the past five years.Mycobacterium chimaera, a bacterium also known as nontuberculous mycobacterium, has been found in devices called heater-coolers, which are used to control the blood temperature of patients on heart-lung bypass machines during surgery.
