19 Long Island Beaches Closed, 1 Due to Bacteria Levels
Health officials closed one Long Island beach for swimmers on Saturday due to high bacteria levels and announced the closing of 18 others because of heavy rainfall. The Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing was closed because of elevated bacteria levels, the Nassau County Health Department said. Heavy rain increases stormwater runoff, which can increase bacteria levels. High Bacteria Levels Close 5 Beaches on South Shore
