The City of Belding issued the warning Friday afternoon after recent water quality tests came back positive for the bacteria. The city is still trying to establish why the E. coli is showing up in the water. They tell FOX 17 that follow up tests are being performed to get a better handle on the actual level of E. coli in the water supply. Belding's Director of Public Works, Ernest Thomas, says the E. coli microbes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches and other symptoms.


E. coli bacteria puts Belding under boil-water advisory

City officials on Friday, Aug. 4 issued a boil-water advisory because of E. coli contamination. BELDING, MI -- Belding area residents connected to the city water supply should boil their water before using it to drink or make food. In a letter to residents, city officials said it wasn't immediately clear how the bacteria entered the water system. Ernest Thomas, the city's director of public works, said increased rainwater runoff, a broken water main or failure in the water treatment process are possibilities. City leaders say they will continue to test the water and inform residents when the water is safe to drink.

E. coli sparks boil water advisory for Belding residents
BELDING, Mich. (WOOD) — Ionia County health officials are urging Belding residents to boil their water, after E. coli bacteria was discovered in the water supply. The city says it will inform residents when water tests come back clear and the boil water advisory is lifted. The city announced the boil water advisory Friday afternoon. The health department says all city residents should boil their water for at least a minute before use to kill the bacteria. It's unclear what caused the contamination, but the city said rainwater run-off, water main breaks and water treatment process failures are common causes.
