PhotoA review of more than a thousand studies has found solid evidence that being overweight or obese increases the risk for at least 13 types of cancer. The study was conducted by a working group of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization.Strong evidence was already available to link five cancers to being overweight or obese: adenocarcinoma of the esophagus; colorectal cancer; breast cancer in postmenopausal women; and uterine and kidney cancers. This new review, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, links an additional eight cancers to excess fat: gastric cardia, a cancer of the part of the stomach closest to the esophagus; liver cancer; gallbladder cancer; pancreatic cancer; thyroid cancer; ovarian cancer; meningioma, a usually benign type of brain cancer; and multiple myeloma, a blood cancer.

Excess Weight Tied To 8 More Types Of Cancer Than Previously Thought
An extensive review by the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that obesity may leave us vulnerable to many more types of cancer than previously thought.A team organized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) — the WHO's cancer research branch — analyzed more than 1,000 epidemiological studies that had looked at the possible connection between excess body fat (as defined by body mass index) and different types of cancer.Their assessment, an update of a similar one they conducted in 2002, found evidence for a heightened risk of 8 more cancer types, including liver, ovarian, and thyroid cancer, from excess body fat.Generally, the increased risk was highest among people who were morbidly obese, adding more support for a direct link.

AdvertisementResearchers have linked obesity to eight more cancer types, bringing the number of cancers associated with excess weight to 13.For a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers from the World Health Organization's International Agency for Cancer on Research (IARC) analyzed over 1,000 studies on cancer risk and excess weight. They found that excess weight or obesity is linked to eight more cancer types: stomach, gall bladder, liver, pancreas, meningioma (a brain tumor), ovary, multiple myeloma (a blood cancer) and thyroid. And the higher the body-mass index of an individual, the higher their risks are for the newly linked cancer types.
