Kidney disease strikes South Fork
The deadly fish parasite that closed down a 100-plus-mile stretch of the Yellowstone River watershed this year appears to be also killing droves of whitefish in the South Fork of the Snake River.Laboratory results are still pending, but Idaho Department of Fish and Game biologists say that they're pretty confident that the dead mountain whitefish piling up on the river bottom the last two weeks were casualties of proliferative kidney disease, which has struck the South Fork to varying degrees since 2012.The outbreak of proliferative kidney disease came on unseasonably late this year, but has also been unusually bad, fisheries biologist Brett High said."We've had it pretty much every year, just to a different extent," High said.
