New Jersey is seeing several cases of a highly contagious virus that causes skin rashes and painful mouth sores.Kinnelon Public School District said via Facebook that as of Sept. 15, there were eight confirmed cases of the hand, foot and mouth disease among students.Six are at Kinnelon High School and two are at Pearl R. Miller Middle School.All after school activities and athletics at all schools were canceled through Sunday.Hunterdon County High School athletic supervisor Mike Raymond said they had a few confirmed cases of Coxsackie at the school, but there have been no changes to its program.Three Pequannock High School football players contracted the virus last month along with 15 players from Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey.At High Point Regional in Wantage, a small number of students were diagnosed with the virus.A football game against West Milford tonight was canceled, and as a precautionary measure, High Point Regional's football operations were suspended temporarily, and all equipment and athletic areas were sterilized.An athletic trainer with Sports Safety International said the virus hasn't spread through multiple locker rooms or schools like this in the past.The state Department of Health says the virus is common this time of year.

According to school officials, a few students have reported symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease at Grayslake Central High School.The students who reported those symptoms were sent home by a school nurse, which is part of the school district's procedures.Officials at the school said the district has also been in contact with the Lake County Health Department.The school has asked their cleaning staff to be "vigilant" about cleaning bathrooms, classrooms and any other shared common areas around the school.Athletic equipment has also been giving an extra cleaning.School officials said District 127 policy allows students to come back to school after they have been fever-free for 24 hours with no Tylenol or Motrin.The school is reminding students about taking preventative measures such as handwashing, reminding them not to share water bottles and to be on the lookout for symptoms of the disease.
