It looks like a football field, but this four-feet by two-feet petri dish is playing host to very different sort of game — nothing more or less than evolution itself. The dish is known as the MEGA-plate, or microbial evolution growth arena plate, and it shows how quickly bacteria can evolve resistance against antibiotic drugs. It's incredibly impressive to look at, but it's also a grim reminder of the danger posed by "superbugs" — bacteria that have evolved to survive antibiotics.

ByHow does bacteria evolve into a superbug?Researchers have apparently discovered the answer to that question.A new video from a multinational team of researchers has shown how bacteria evolves and grows into a superbug, or a germ that is resistant to all forms of antibiotics, including what is known in medical parlance as the antibiotic "of last resort."Researchers from Harvard Medical School and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology were able to come up with the evolution experiment by creating a giant, 2-by-4 foot petri dish and tracking how the E. coli bacteria transforms as it is treated with different types of antibiotics.

A research team from Harvard Medical School and the Israel Institute of Technology – Technion designed a way to observe the evolution of bacteria and prepared a time-lapse video that showed not only the bacteria's growth but also its resistance to drugs. The cinematic approach to drug resistance allowed scientists to demonstrate the process in a short film, after executing a series of experiments to understand the bacteria's relationship with antibiotics, which revealed how the bacteria adapted to it to survive. The team used a 2-by-4 foot petri dish they constructed, to then fill it with a substance used to nourish biological material.
