AdvertisementCases of the polio-like disease acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, which causes paralysis in children, is on the rise in the United States.The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has been monitoring cases of this rare condition since 2014, reported a spike in this mysterious illness documenting 50 cases in 24 states from January to August this year, a significant increase from the number recorded last year.Of those affected, 90 percent were children.What makes this rare condition very scary, according to Aaron Michael Milstone, from John Hopkins University School of Medicine, is that it is a polio-like disease that can show up even in healthy children.
