Legionnaires' disease symptoms are very similar to other types of pneumonia and can include cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches. A guest at the Luxor died in January 2012 of Legionnaires' disease while several others contracted the illness. The Southern Nevada Health District is investigating two cases of Legionnaires' disease reported in guests who stayed separately at the Rio hotel-casino in March and April. Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria. Generally, people do not spread Legionnaires' disease to other people.

In 2011, a guest at the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas died after contracting Legionnaires' disease. The health district and hotel did not identify the names and conditions of the two people. Health officials contacted the Rio after concluding that was the only place the two patients stayed at while in Las Vegas, Bergtholdt said.
