Director John Avildsen dies at 81; won Oscar for 'Rocky' according to : StarTribune

He relented and directed both "The Karate Kid, Part II" in 1986 and "The Karate Kid, Part III" in 1989. LOS ANGELES — John G. Avildsen, who directed "Rocky" and "The Karate Kid" — two dark-horse, underdog favorites that went on to become Hollywood franchises — died Friday at age 81. After "Joe," Avildsen directed "Save the Tiger" (1973) starring Jack Lemmon as a burned-out dress manufacturer. It won Oscars for best picture, director (Avildsen) and editing and was nominated for seven others. A documentary on Avildsen, "John G. Avildsen: King of the Underdogs," premiered earlier this year at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

John G. Avildsen, who won an Academy Award for directing Rocky and helmed the first three original Karate Kid movies, has died. He also guided Jack Lemmon to an Academy Award in 'Save the Tiger' and helmed the first three 'Karate Kid' films. He was the subject of a documentary, John G. Avildsen: King of the Underdogs, that premiered this year at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Avildsen died of pancreatic cancer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, his son, Anthony, told the Los Angeles Times. Rocky (1976), of course, starred Sylvester Stallone as a determined Philadelphia club fighter who goes on to fight for the heavyweight championship of the world.
