Boca Raton prohibits swimming at beaches after high bacteria levels found at two sites
The city of Boca Raton is prohibiting swimming at all its beaches after results from testing at two sites showed high bacterial levels in the water. Samples taken from Spanish River Park showed levels of enterococci bacteria at 80 parts per 100 milliliters of beach water. Samples from South Inlet Park showed levels of enterococci bacteria at 190 parts per 100 milliliters. Typical causes include runoff following heavy rains, high surf from high winds and high tides, heavy recreational usage and wildlife. The cause of the elevated bacteria levels isn't known, but it's a rare case, said health department spokesman Tim O'Connor.
