Cancer death rates fell 1 percent a year in rural America, compared with 1.6 percent in urban areas. The report, published July 6, is the first to detail cancer differences and death rates in urban and rural America. Overall cancer rates were slightly lower in rural areas (442 cases per 100,000) than in urban areas (457 per 100,000). The CDC said rural health care providers can help close the gaps by promoting habits that lower cancer risk. Cancer death rates are declining overall in the United States, but they are higher and falling more slowly in rural America, a new federal government report shows.

The drop in Cancer deaths in the United States can be partly attributed to advances in oncological drug research. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report on Thursday detailed the differences in types of cancer and rates of cancer-related death in different parts of America. Cancer-related deaths are soaring in rural parts of the United States, despite falling overall in the rest of the country, it was revealed. 'It's hard to quantify, but in rural areas of the United States cancer is the leading cause of death, versus heart disease in the rest of the country, so that is significant,' she explained.
