Champion the Cure Challenge raises nearly $600,000 for Brewer cancer center — Health — Bangor Daily News — BDN MaineBREWER, Maine — Survivors, families, researchers, nurses and others affected by cancer came together Saturday to raise money that they hope will save more lives."We're here for the patients for whom treatment has failed, as well as to celebrate with those it's helped," said Allen L'Italien, executive director of Eastern Maine Medical Center Cancer Care.More than 2,600 people registered to take part in the event, with more signing up Saturday morning.They walked, ran, biked and joined motorcycle motorcades to raise an estimated $592,000 toward local cancer research efforts.

Watson Clinic's cancer center earns gold statusLAKELAND — Weeks after earning the highest level, gold status, on its three-year re-accreditation, Watson Clinic Cancer & Research Center received an even bigger recognition.The center was notified it was the only clinic in Florida to also receive the 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award from the accrediting agency, the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, said Jenny Baker, Watson's public relations and communications manager."So far this year, the Commission on Cancer has surveyed a total of 239 cancer facilities across the country," Baker said in a news release."The results of our evaluation set us apart as not only the state's sole recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award, but also as the only freestanding facility in Florida to have achieved gold status re-accreditation– the highest level of achievement possible - across every judging category."The accreditation process looks at 34 categories.
