TRICHY: Cavendish banana comprises 60% of the total banana cultivation in India.Recently Panama disease, a type of Fusarium wilt, has begun infecting Cavendish banana cultivation across the country, said director of the National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB), Trichy, Dr S Uma.Speaking at a meeting to celebrate the 23{+r}{+d} 'Foundation Day' of the centre on Sunday, Dr Uma said the centre is taking all necessary steps to wipe out the disease and has convened a meeting in which all stakeholders participated. An integrated approach to find a solution to the recent emergence of Panama disease and leaf spot disease on banana cultivation was the focal point of discussion at the meeting.Various ways and means were discussed during the day which was celebrated as 'Banana Farmers' day.A scientist at the meeting said Panama disease is a major hurdle in banana cultivation which leads to premature ripening of fruits in the field, causing major loss to farmers.Panama disease has become a major constraint for production of Cavendish banana (Grand Nain) in foreign countries like Taiwan, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, China, Pakistan and Oman."The disease is highly influenced by climate change.Hence, effective forecasting and decision support system have to be made available to growers.
