Menstrual Pain Reliever Drug Mefenamic Acid Shows Promise As Alzheimer's Disease Treatment
Ticked Off!Here's What You Need To Know About Lyme DiseaseAdvertisementMany women who suffer from menstrual pain turn to mefenamic acid, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), for relief during their monthly period. It appears, though, that the common anti-inflammatory drug also shows promise as treatment for Alzheimer's disease, a condition that currently affects more than 5 million Americans and has no available cure. The drug works by targeting an inflammatory pathway known as NLRP3 inflammasome, which is known to damage brain cells.

A recent study out of Manchester shows that giving mice anti-inflammatory drugs reduced and in some cases reversed memory problems the mice were experiencing related to Alzheimer's disease. These findings confirm the general scientific theory that inflammation deals much of the damage in Alzheimer's patients. The drug known as mefenamic acid but marketed as Ponstel significantly improved the memory of mice who had suffered memory loss due to Alzheimers. However, the Manchester University researchers say that they will have to conduct human trials of the drug to ensure that it achieves similar results.
