Tests run by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation have revealed that there are large amounts of bacteria from human and animal fecal matter in rivers and streams across Maryland.This summer, the CBF monitored the water in Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Harford and Howard Counties as well as Baltimore City, where they found bacteria levels above government safety levels on multiple occasions."It's been discouraging.

Pollution in Baltimore area rivers, streams and some popular swimming holes is being compared to toilet water, according to findings released by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.The organization on Wednesday released results of bacteria testing conducted in a number of water ways in the city and suburbs and highlighted the pollution in the water.Chesapeake Bay Foundation officials said urban streams are subject to pollutants and runoff and contact with water should be avoided.

WASHINGTON — Swift streams, babbling brooks and rushing rivers may not be as pretty as they look, because when environmentalists tested natural bodies of water in five Maryland counties, what they found is yucky."The problem is that there's excrement in the streams and the rivers where we sometimes swim, kayak and recreate," said Tom Zolper, assistant media director for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.Waterways were checked in Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Harford and Howard counties and in the city of Baltimore.
