High E. coli level shuts Manchester public beach 10 days this summer
High E. coli level shuts Manchester public beach 10 days this summerCrystal Lake in Manchester was quiet on Wednesday after the city closed the popular swimming hole because of contaminated water.(DAVID LANE/UNION LEADER)MANCHESTER — In what has become almost a weekly event, the public beach at Crystal Lake is closed to swimmers once again because of high levels of E. coli bacteria. And this week's sample is exceedingly high, the highest recorded this summer — 2,420 E. coli — or 27 times the acceptable level of 88 E. coli, according to Philip Alexakos, the city's chief of Environmental Health.Prior samples, that resulted in the beach being closed this summer, ranged from 167 to 1,156, he said.Swimming has been banned at the popular swimming spot for 10 days this summer, counting today, the most ever recorded.Alexakos said there is no one reason why such high bacteria counts are being recorded.Health officials spotted dog tracks and geese droppings on the edge of the lake when they went to test the water on Monday, however.Alexakos said another factor is the drought that has raised the temperature of the water increasing the rate bacteria grow.

Decaying bug caused E. coli in High Point water
Decaying bug caused E. coli in High Point waterBY PAUL B. JOHNSON, HIGH POINT ENTERPRISEHIGH POINT — The infested cocoon of a worm or another type of bug in a single outdoor pipe led to the E. coli scare that caused a citywide boil water advisory last week, according to city of High Point officials. The city called for a virtually unprecedented, systemwide boil-water advisory that started a week ago today and lasted through Saturday evening before being lifted.City officials haven't pinpointed the type of decaying insect or bug that was in the outdoor pipe at a home, which was the isolated source of the E. coli.
