AdvertisementHand, foot and mouth disease is commonly seen in babies and toddlers, but more than a dozen college students at the Florida State University (FSU) have recently been struck with this viral infection.Florida State University Health Services director Lesley Sacher said that less than 16 cases had been seen on-site but she knows of more students who were either seen by a healthcare provider elsewhere or who called without coming in.Sacher said that the outbreak started as "a trickle" on Monday, Sept. 12, but no new cases were reported on Wednesday.The disease, which is characterized by painful mouth sores, fever and skin rash on hands and feet often affects children below 5 years old.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease has hit Florida State University and invaded dorm rooms over the past week.FSU Health Services have diagnosed or identified up to 16 cases on-site, according to Lesley Sacher, director of University Health Services.She said she was also aware of more students who had either called without actually coming in to the clinic or were diagnosed by other health care providers in the community.Hand, foot, and mouth disease is seen more commonly in infants and children than adults, but cases are often seen on college campuses, according to the American College Health Association.

Florida State University is trying to contain an on-campus outbreak of an illness typically seen at day care.A university official told NBC News that as of Friday afternoon, there have been 22 total cases of hand, foot and mouth disease — a highly contagious virus in which sores develop in the mouth, and a skin rash with blisters appears on the hands and soles of the feet."I'm thinking we've got probably one more little spike [in cases], then hopefully it will have worn itself out," said Lesley Sacher, executive director of university health services at the Tallahassee school.Parents help move their students out at the end of the semester on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee in 2015.
