Prioritize funding for Sickle cell disease researchSeptember is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, which gives those of us in the health care sector and policymakers an opportunity to take stock and consider whether as a society we are doing all that we can to address this often devastating disease.Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited blood disorder, impacting 100,000 Americans, and affects mostly African-Americans but also affects many other people of various ancestry.Approximately 2,000 infants with sickle cell disease are born in the US annually, including one out of 365 African Americans.One in 12 African-Americans has sickle cell trait and are genetic carriers of the sickle mutation.
