Spread of cancer linked to cell metabolism, study shows
Spread of cancer linked to cell metabolism, study showsGHENT, Belgium, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Cellular metabolism in white blood cells can be manipulated to prevent the spread of cancer, VIB and KU Leuven researchers suggest in a new study.According to the authors of the study, published online in the journal Cell Metabolism, specific types of white blood cells called macrophages can be re-engineered to "steal" sugar from tumors, effectively tightening their structure and containing cancer.During the experiment, investigators assessed glycosis within macrophages to understand how the cells convert sugar into energy.By blocking a specific gene identified as REDD1, the research team was able to stimulate the process.

Pierce Brosnan claims he was 'deceived' into endorsing Indian chewing product linked to cancerPierce Brosnan was "deceived" into endorsing what he thought was a tooth whitener, but was in fact an Indian chewing product linked to mouth cancer, the 007 actor has claimed.Adverts in several Indian newspapers showed a bearded and tuxedoed Brosnan brandishing a tub of pan masala - a mixture of spices, leaves and nuts popular in Asia for providing a mild stimulant effect when chewed. An accompanying television advert saw Brosnan using the product to infiltrate a villain's mansion, before proclaiming to the camera: "Class never goes out of style".The campaign drew ridicule for its unsubtle spoof of the James Bond films to help sell a product that is increasingly viewed as unhygienic in modern India, and is associated with the ubiquitous red spit stains seen on the country's walls and pavements.
