Guinea launches infectious disease centre to fight EbolaGuinea launched a new infectious disease centre Friday designed to safeguard the west African nation against a new resurgence in the Ebola virus, almost three years after the epidemic broke out.Ebola's "patient zero", a two-year-old boy living in the forests of southern Guinea, fell ill in December 2013 potentially after contact with a fruit bat, scientists believe. The new French-funded Institut Pasteur in Conakry will conduct research, train scientists and test for some of the world's deadliest diseases, including Lassa fever, yellow fever and Rift Valley fever, all of which threaten Guinea's population.Guinean President Alpha Conde (R) and French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrauit (C) put the first stone of the upcoming Pasteur Institute in Conakry on November 11, 2016 ©Cellou Binani (AFP)Guinea lacked the resources to combat Ebola as it ravaged the country until all active cases were declared over five months ago, including the means of testing the virus quickly to stop its spread.

LEPROSY WARNING: Britain's red squirrels carry infectious disease
GETTY There are only 140,000 red squirrel's left in the UKIt was thought that the squirrels only carried the animal version of the disease, but after testing 25 red squirrel samples, researchers from the University of Edinburgh discovered that the squirrels have been carrying a different type of leprosy around England, Scotland and Ireland that could have infected the British population.People are being urged to "avoid physical contact with the wild animals" and should "wash their hands before eating" to further reduce the risk."Taking sensible precautions such as avoiding physical contact with wild animals and washing your hands before eating will further minimise any risk," said Professor Anna Meredith, of the University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies."The discovery of leprosy in red squirrels is worrying from a conservation perspective but shouldn't raise concerns for people in the UK.
