We lost Gwen Ifill too soon — and just when we needed her the most
We lost Gwen Ifill too soon — and just when we needed her the mostWe lost Gwen Ifill too soon — and just when we needed her the most At a time when race is no longer a subtext of American politics, voices like hers are needed more than ever.Eight years ago, I met Gwen Ifill at a media party just as the 2008 Republican National Convention kicked off in Minneapolis. It seems so fitting in hindsight: Here I was, a cub reporter working on my master's degree in journalism, getting my first taste of covering national politics during what I thought was the craziest election possible at a time that almost every media expert would agree was an unequivocally historic low for the industry as a whole.(Remember those days?)

Remembering Gwen Ifill
Remembering Gwen IfillI was so saddened to hear of the passing of Gwen Ifill, an amazing journalist, PBS news anchor, personal friend, and role model and mentor to many.Throughout her career, Gwen broke both gender and race barriers and she also did what I admire most about her success -- she was vigilant about reducing the barriers for the women following her.She never forgot her own struggles to be hired, to be respected and acknowledged, to be the first African-American woman in a position, and she fought for equal opportunities and access for others her entire life.A personal memory that I hold close today is the first lunch we shared after I had been named the first woman president of PBS.
