Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S. Thursday is named World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day.Other facts about pancreatic cancer include:- it's the only major cancer with a five-year survival rate in the single digits, at just 8%- it's estimated 53,070 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and only 11,290 will survive.- 71% of patients die within the first year of diagnosis- around 430 Iowans will die this year- an estimated 418,451 new pancreatic cancer cases will be diagnosed worldwide in 2020On Tuesday, the city of Cedar Rapids joined the local non-profit, the Michael W. Oglesby Foundation, in proclaiming Thursday as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day in Cedar Rapids.The Michael W. Oglesby Foundation works to educate the community about pancreatic cancer, while supporting those impacted and raising funds for early detection research.
