Fewer than 5 percent of cases of Alzheimer's disease have a clear genetic cause, making it hard to predict who will develop the devastating brain-wasting disorder. There is an urgent need to develop biomarkers and early treatments before the symptoms of decline take hold and destroy lives. Now, using a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease, researchers discover a link between early bone loss and brain degeneration that may begin to address this need.Years before the symptoms emerge, abnormal protein deposits are already forming throughout the brain in people with Alzheimer's disease.

A new scientific discovery may provide a future avenue for treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's disease.A study published Nov. 28 in the journal JAMA Neurology examined aquaporin-4, a type of membrane protein in the brain.Using brains donated for scientific research, researchers at OHSU discovered a correlation between the prevalence of aquaporin-4 among older people who did not suffer from Alzheimer's as compared to those who had the disease."It suggests that aquaporin-4 might be a useful target in preventing and treating Alzheimer's disease," said senior author Jeffrey Iliff, Ph.D., an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine in the OHSU School of Medicine.

A national screening programme to pick up Alzheimer's disease is on the horizon, experts have said, after insisting that drugs to fight dementia will be ready within 10 years.Scientists who are working on treatments said medicine would be available in time to meet a pledge made by David Cameron to slow down or cure Alzheimer's by 2025.And once drugs were able to treat the disease, a programme to find those at most risk will almost certainly follow, experts told a briefing in London. When asked if widespread national screening was likely, Dr Nick Fox, Professor of Neurology at University College London, (UCL) said: "Definitely.
