Breast cancer survivors with good social support networks seem to live longer and to have a lower risk of their cancer returning, according to a new study. In earlier research, the study's lead author had found that women with few social ties before a breast cancer diagnosis were at an increased risk of death from the malignancy."I wanted to do this study in a large cohort of women to try and replicate the findings I generated a decade ago," said Candyce Kroenke, of Kaiser Permanent Northern California Division of Research in Oakland. For the new study, published December 12th in Cancer, the researchers analyzed data collected from 9,267 women in the United States and China within two years of their breast cancer diagnosis.

In a large Kaiser Permanente study of women with invasive breast cancer, socially integrated women -- those with the most social ties, such as spouses, community ties, friendships and family members -- were shown to have significantly lower breast cancer death rates and disease recurrence than socially isolated women. This study was published in the American Cancer Society journal Cancer."It is well established that women who have more social ties generally, including those with breast cancer, have a lower risk of death overall," said Candyce H. Kroenke, ScD, MPH, a research scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research and lead author of the study."Our findings demonstrate the beneficial influence of women's social ties on breast cancer-specific outcomes, including recurrence and breast cancer death."

(CNN) Scientists in South Africa have found a link between a particular type of malaria resistance and the likelihood of cancer metastasis in some patients of African descent.Geoffrey Siwo, research scientist at IBM Research Africa and his team in Johannesburg have been aiming to predict and attempt to solve Africa's future health issues.Such ambitious ideals meant they had to start noticing trends in the region-- one being that in some African countries the population was becoming wealthier and aging slowly, however the burden of cancer was greaterIn 2015, the older population (aged 65 and over) exceeded 1 million in 11 African countries , including Nigeria, 5.6 million; Egypt, 4.6 million; and South Africa, 3.1 million. The team was fascinated by how cancer starts to interact with other diseases prevalent in the region, such as malaria.
