Lyme disease has been spreading across the United States over the past several decades, and a new study has confirmed that ticks carrying the disease are present in eastern national parks.According to the study published in the Journal of Medical Entomology, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Park Service (NPS) collected ticks along hiking trails in nine eastern national parks.They found blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis), also called deer ticks, infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease in all nine parks.The study is the first to confirm the presence of these ticks, which researchers already suspected because Lyme disease has been reported in the region.

Pennsylvania has taken the top spot for the most reported cases of Lyme disease in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.There were 12,092 cases of the disease in the state reported in 2016 through Dec. 24, whereas New Jersey had just 3,850 cases, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported late last week.New York, which took the No.2 spot in most reported cases in the nation based on the preliminary data, had just 4,002.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pennsylvania again leads the nation in reported cases of Lyme disease, according to tracking conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports (http://bit.ly/2ikcWQf ) preliminary data released by the CDC on Thursday shows Pennsylvania with 12,092 cases of the tick-borne disease this year through Dec. 24.The figure is triple the amount reported in New York, which registered the country's second-highest total with 4,002 infections in 2016.CDC officials say more than 30,000 cases are reported each year nationwide.
