Report outlines growing cost and impact of Alzheimer's disease
"This is only going to become more intimidating and daunting as time goes on."The 2017 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures report is a comprehensive compilation of national statistics and information on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and the effect on individuals, families, government and the nation's health-care system. The national cost of caring for those with Alzheimer's and dementia is estimated to be $259 billion this year, according to a new report from the Alzheimer's Association. That cost is expected to increase 34.6 percent to $592 million over the next eight years, according to the report. During that same time, deaths from heart disease fell 14 percent and HIV/AIDS deaths plunged 54 percent. In Oklahoma, the estimated Medicaid costs for adults 65 and older suffering some form of dementia is estimated at $440 million this year.
