The FDA Links Breast Implants to a Rare Form of Cancer stat : Vogue

The Food and addiction Administration's report of nine deaths linked to a rare form of cancer associated with breast implants is bringing a new round of attention to the country's most popular form of cosmetic procedure. Nevertheless, Attai warns women with implants—and those without—to be self-aware. The FDA warns patients that "breast implants are not lifetime devices." Attai says, "The longer women have them, the greater the likelihood of complications."Fortunately, most problems associated with implants generally resolve once the devices are removed. The cancer, called anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL), affects the immune system and often first appears in the skin or lymph nodes—more specifically, the capsule of scar tissue surrounding the implants. "I've been told they've been among the most investigated implants known to man," confirms Wong.

FDA Grants Accelerated Approval to First Treatment for Rare Skin Cancer
PhotoA rare cancer first linked to breast implants in 2011 has now been associated with nine deaths, the Food and addiction Administration said Tuesday. The deaths were not caused by breast cancer, the agency said, but by a rare malignancy in the immune system, anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. The problem is more likely to occur with textured implants, which have a pebbly surface, than with smooth implants, the agency said. But women receiving implants should be aware of the potential problem and the increased risk with textured implants, the agency says. In cases linked to implants, this rare form of cancer grows in the breast, usually in the capsule of scar tissue that forms around an implant.
