Second case of flesh eating dog disease Alabama Rot diagnosed by Devon vets
Vets in Cullompton have confirmed that a second dog has contracted killer flesh eating disease Alabama Rot. "Any dog owners who are worried that their pet might have Alabama Rot should contact their veterinary practice immediately. "It's a concerning thing from a dog owner's point of view but it is a very rare disease. "Of course, the news of more confirmed cases today just increases the need to focus on discovering why this condition occurs." All of the UK cases confirmed with Alabama Rot to date had been breeds other than greyhounds, however, the first UK greyhound with skin lesions and kidney failure – the hallmark features of Alabama Rot – has now sadly been confirmed.

Alabama Rot news: Deadly dog disease cases soar over the 100 mark

The first dogs to contract the mysterious disease were greyhounds in the southern United States in the 1980s. It took then almost 30 years to appear in Britain but since 2012, cases have steadily increased across a wide geographical area. Four new cases emerged over the weekend and, for the first time, a greyhound has been confirmed as suffering from the flesh-destroying condition. It invariably begins after a dog has been out walking and the first signs are lesions developing on the lower legs. All vets in the UK and Ireland are being asked to provide details of suspected cases.
