Chagas disease more fatal than thought
SAO PAULO, Brazil — The nickname given to the insects that spread Chagas disease is somewhat bittersweet: Kissing bugs. "The general assumption is that the non-symptomatic form of Chagas disease is associated with negligible morbidity/mortality for the patients," said Dr. Eric Dumonteil, a Chagas disease researcher at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in the U.S. The parasite then enters the bloodstream and causes Chagas disease, also known as trypanosomiasis. In the positive group, "there was 17 times the risk of cardio disease," Sabino said. The kissing bugs behind the disease have also been reported in 25 U.S. states, with the largest concentration in the South.
