Federal government announces funding for Lyme disease research
"The aim of the Lyme disease research network will be to generate new evidence and data about Lyme disease, about how to improve diagnosis and treatment and to help us better understand its causes and its transmission," Philpott said. Health Minister Jane Philpott introduced new Lyme disease research framework Tuesday in the House of Commons, and also announced a $4-million investment to get the research network up and running. ( Sean Kilpatrick / THE CANADIAN PRESS )OTTAWA—The federal government is hoping a new research framework will help doctors better diagnose and treat the ballooning number of Lyme disease cases across Canada. The Public Health Agency of Canada said there were more than 900 cases of Lyme disease in 2015, up from roughly 140 in 2009. But while not all critics will be silenced, said federal Green party Leader Elizabeth May, she's satisfied that the redrawn framework will move research and understanding of Lyme disease in the right direction. The federal government is pouring $4 million into the country's first-ever Lyme disease framework – a timely investment as cases of Lyme disease have shot up across the country over the past few years. She says some Canadians are forced to travel to other countries like the United States for testing for Lyme disease. The framework comes along with $4 million of funding for research to further our understanding of Lyme disease, and how to diagnose and treat it. A Toronto woman knows first-hand how difficult it can be, as Lyme disease is often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. In other words, there's a lot of people falsely told they don't have Lyme disease," Dr. Zubek told Global News.
