Novick test the river water for E. coli every week and has been testing for 15 years. "For as long as we've been monitoring, they've been high," said Jon Novick, an environmental administrator in Denver. According to the Centers for Disease Control, most strains of E. coli are harmless, but some can get you sick. Novick said people should stay out of the river if they have open cuts.
