1980s Oilers enforcer Dave Semenko dies of cancer at 59 stat : ABC News

Dave Semenko, the Edmonton Oilers tough guy who protected Wayne Gretzky during the 1980s, has died. He helped Edmonton win the Stanley Cup in 1984 and 1985. Oilers executive Kevin Lowe, a star defenseman on Edmonton's Stanley Cup champion squads, called Semenko the "Wayne Gretzky of the tough guys" in his book "Champions." Semenko was the bodyguard for "The Great One" for parts of 10 seasons with the Oilers in the World Hockey Association and NHL. Semenko spent the bulk of his career with the Oilers, finishing with the Hartford Whalers and Toronto Maple Leafs.

"It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Oilers legend Dave Semenko after a short, but courageous battle with cancer," the Oilers said in a statement. (The Sports Xchange) - Dave Semenko, who long served as Wayne Gretzky's protector on the ice for the Edmonton Oilers, died Thursday morning from cancer. The 6-foot-3 forward played his final season with the Toronto Maple Leafs the following year. One of the more-feared enforcers of his time, Semenko recorded 65 goals, 88 assists and 1,175 penalty minutes in 575 career games with the Oilers, Whalers and Maple Leafs. Semenko, who was diagnosed with liver and pancreatic cancer, passed away with friends and family present, Sportsnet reported.
