Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo was just released from a Chinese jail according to : vox

China's only Nobel Peace Prize winner, pro-democracy activist Liu Xiaobo, was temporarily released from jail to be treated for late-stage liver cancer, a break from Beijing's recent pattern of harshly cracking down on domestic dissent. Who is Liu Xiaobo? In 1989, thousands of Chinese students and protestors demonstrated for weeks in Tiananmen Square calling for democratic reform. The Chinese government refused to release Liu from prison to attend the ceremony in Norway and prevented his family from accepting the award on his behalf. Shortly after Liu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, his wife and fellow poet, Liu Xia, was placed under house arrest as a part of the Chinese government's crackdown on dissent.

Liu Xiaobo, China's jailed Nobel peace prize laureate, has been granted medical parole after being diagnosed with terminal liver cancer last month, his lawyer says. He was awarded the Nobel prize a year later and was represented by an empty chair at the ceremony in Oslo. China condemned his Nobel prize as unwanted foreign interference in its internal affairs, and refused to allow him to attend the ceremony in Oslo. Diplomatic ties and trade talks between Norway and China were frozen after Liu was given the award, and Norway's salmon industry suffered as exports to China were halted. In December 2010, Liu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his activism promoting human rights in China, causing Beijing to freeze diplomatic ties with Norway. Supporters of Liu Xiaobo yesterday took to Twitter and other platforms to express sadness at the news of his illness and denounce the Chinese government's treatment of him. William Nee (倪偉平), another China researcher for Amnesty, said authorities should ensure Liu Xiaobo was getting adequate medical care and he called for the couple's immediate and unconditional release.
