HEALTH: CDC warns against ticks, Lyme disease
They include: Lyme disease bacteria, Babesia protozoa, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and other rickettsia, even encephalitis-causing viruses, and possibly Bartonella bacteria. Because they are not "specific" to Lyme disease, this can lead to a delay in seeking medical care, diagnosis and treatment. Every year, an estimated that 300,000 Americans are infected with Lyme disease. This potentially life-threatening virus is carried and transmitted by three types of ticks, including the deer tick that transmits Lyme disease.
