SILive : declared in Staten Islanders warned about dangers of ticks, Lyme disease

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Raising awareness of the dangers of ticks and Lyme disease is a priority for Assemblyman Ron Castorina. Signs and symptoms of Lyme disease include: rash, joint/muscle pain, shortness of breath, chest palpitations, headaches, numbness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Sabatino, a retired NYPD officer and father of four children, lives with Lyme disease, which has caused a wide range of debilitating medical conditions. "Lyme disease is very serious, but that doesn't have to stop people from using parks," said Robert Sabatino, executive director of Lyme Society Inc., who also spoke at the press event. It's also a good idea to place the tick in an airtight container or plastic bag and send it to be tested for Lyme disease or other tick-borne diseases.

HEALTH: CDC warns against ticks, Lyme disease

They include: Lyme disease bacteria, Babesia protozoa, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and other rickettsia, even encephalitis-causing viruses, and possibly Bartonella bacteria. Because they are not "specific" to Lyme disease, this can lead to a delay in seeking medical care, diagnosis and treatment. Every year, an estimated that 300,000 Americans are infected with Lyme disease. This potentially life-threatening virus is carried and transmitted by three types of ticks, including the deer tick that transmits Lyme disease. Humans contract Lyme disease when bitten by a tick that is infected with the difficult-to-pronounce bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi.
