New Tick Virus: Powassan Could Be Worse Than Lyme Disease according to : Fortune

Powassan encephalitis, a disease caused by Powassan virus, could become the next tick-borne epidemic in the U.S. Transmitted by the same tick that causes Lyme disease, Powassan encephalitis is fatal in about 10% of cases, and half of its survivors suffer permanent brain damage . The full spectrum of illness caused by Powassan virus is poorly understood, especially when combined with the many other tick-borne pathogens that coexist with Powassan virus in ticks. But we do not know what happens to all of the people who must be getting bitten by ticks infected with Powassan virus. Public health agencies could be doing much more to respond to yet another public health threat from ticks.

New Tick Virus: Powassan Could Be Worse Than Lyme Disease
"In Connecticut, if your kid has a facial nerve palsy, it's Lyme disease," until proven otherwise, Dr. Bennett said. The classic symptom of Lyme disease is the bull's-eye rash called erythema migrans. Later complications of Lyme disease can include painful Lyme meningitis, or a nerve palsy, which can make it look as if one side of a child's face has just stopped working. "Far and away, the most common infection I see is Lyme," Dr. Bennett said. "Half the people who have clear Lyme don't remember getting bitten and never have a rash," Dr. Bennett said.

Plymouth woman battled Lyme Disease before competing on 'American Ninja Warrior'

Plymouth resident Sara Heesen gets to show off her considerable muscle on Monday's episode of "American Ninja Warrior." Heesen credits fellow competitor Hunter Geurard, a coach/manager at Edina's Obstacle Academy, for pushing and supporting her during training sessions. But before stepping onto the course of the NBC reality-competition hit, she had to tackle another obstacle. Shortly before sending in an audition tape for the second time, Heesen was diagnosed with Lyme Disease, a bacterial infection that can affect any organ of the body and cause extreme fatigue. "Warrior" airs at 7 p.m. on KARE, Ch.
