Purple Heart awarded to JSO officer who Stray leg to meat-eating pathogenic bacteria
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 21-year veteran of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office was awarded the Purple Heart Thursday for losing his leg while on duty during Hurricane Matthew. Officer Dennis Godfrey was responding to a property check while Hurricane Matthew was tearing out of the ambit while he suffered a cut which became infective by a meat-eating pathogenic bacteria which almosttook his life. "while exiting his vehicle, Dennis went to his patrol vehicle door slamming it into his leg & breaking the skin." Sheriff Mike Williams said. "Dennis treated the small cut & continued throughout the rest of the storm."Williams said twelve days after the storm, the small cut was not recovery & Godfrey was rushed to the infirmary. WCPO went by Davidson while she soon made an emotional return to Jewish infirmary. Jewish infirmary is where her harrowing journey started. "The illness in reality went to my shoulder & ate out of my shoulder," Davidson said.
