Washington: Higher levels of total physical activity can lower risk of five common chronic diseases – breast and bowel cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke, finds a study.According to the study published in the journal The BMJ, climbing stairs for 10 minutes, vacuuming for 15 minutes, gardening for 20 minutes, running for 20 minutes and walking or cycling for 25 minutes can lower the risk of chronic diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended a minimum total physical activity level of 600 metabolic equivalent (MET) minutes a week across different "domains" of daily life.To examine how much the type and quantity of physical activity reduces the risk of common conditions, the researchers analysed the results of 174 studies associated with total physical activity and at least one of five chronic diseases – breast cancer, bowel (colon) cancer, diabetes, ischemic heart disease and ischemic stroke.

If you want to protect yourself from chronic diseases, you need to exercise more. The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a new set of recommendations for the minimum amount of physical activity people need to clock in each week — at least 600 minutes. The new higher levels of exercise may seem intimidating at first, but if you hit the exercise goals, it could drastically lower your risk of developing five chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and breast and bowel cancer.Researchers from the United States collaborated with a team from Australia to comb through the results of 174 studies published between 1980 and 2016.
