An assistant professor who leads a group of volunteers and students who conduct E. Coli testing on the Scantic River in East Windsor and Enfield says the levels of the bacteria detected are the highest she's seen this summer but the cause of the spike is unknown."As a scientist, it's very difficult to pinpoint the causality," said Kirsten Martin, assistant professor of biology at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford and a board member of the Scantic River Watershed Association.Swimming and boating is being discouraged along stretches of the Scantic River in East Windsor and Enfield after the very high levels of E. coli were detected this week.

The public beach at Crystal Lake is closed to swimming due to elevated levels of E. coli bacteria, according to the Manchester Health Department.Elevated bacteria levels were detected during a routine water sample on Monday.The department said water samples taken at other locations on Crystal Lake did not show elevated levels of E. coli.
