Breast cancer drug Tamoxifen listed on Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme from todayPostedMore Australian women will have access to a preventative breast cancer drug that has today been listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, the Federal Government says. The drug, known as Tamoxifen or Novaldex-D, which had until now been used only as a breast cancer treatment, could cut the risk of getting the disease by 30 to 40 per cent.Previously, only women who were actually suffering from a certain type of breast cancer could access subsidies for the medication. But Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley said that system had now been broadened to include women who were also at a moderate to high risk of getting breast cancer.

Breast cancer treatments vary widely in cost and complicationsNot only are better breast cancer drugs available now compared to the 1980S, but doctors also have a much better understanding of disease variations between patients, requiring different therapies.— AFP picNEW YORK, Oct 1 — Women with early-stage breast cancer may have fewer treatment complications and lower costs when they don't get a mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery, a US study suggests. In recent years, reconstruction following a mastectomy has become more widely available, contributing to a sharp increase in the number of women who opt for this treatment even when less aggressive alternatives may be just as effective, researchers note in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. With early-stage tumors that haven't spread to distant parts of the body, survival odds are similar for a mastectomy or a lumpectomy paired with radiation, previous studies have found.
