Merrimack Pharmaceuticals Inc said it would stop a study testing its drug in advanced breast cancer patients, after an analysis suggested the drug would unlikely show superiority over chemotherapy.Merrimack's shares slumped 21.79 percent to $4.20 in premarket trading on Wednesday.Both sets of patients - on Merrimack's drug and on chemotherapy - experienced a smaller-than-expected impact in terms of slowing their disease progression.Continuing the mid-stage study would unlikely show the drug's benefit over chemotherapy, an independent data and safety monitoring board recommended.

Shares of Merrimack Pharmaceuticals Inc. tumbled Wednesday after it halted a clinical trial of an experimental breast cancer drug, bowing to an outside panel's finding that the medicine probably wouldn't work better than treatments already on the market.The independent data and safety monitoring board analyzed interim data from Cambridge-based Merrimack's mid-stage study of its drug to treat patients with HER2-postive metastatic breast cancer who had previously been treated with two other drugs.AdvertisementIt concluded that patients taking the drug, called MM-302, had shorter than expected progression-free survival and continuing the study "would be unlikely to demonstrate benefit over the comparator treatments," Merrimack said.The company said the panel's recommendation was confirmed by a so-called "futility assessment" before it made the decision to stop the trial.

Rare cancer linked to breast implants has been confirmed in 46 cases across Australasia since 2007 - as experts say augmentation increases the risk of cancer 50 fold.Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) occurs near breast implants and is linked to bacteria accidentally introduced during implant surgery and textured implants -popular in Australia - are 70 times more likely to be contaminated.Three of the 46 confirmed cases of ALCL led to death, The Age reported.Health experts had thought the frequency of ALCL to be between one in three million and one in 50,000, the ABC reported.
