KHON2 : declared in Signs taken down as bacteria levels return to normal off Waikiki beach

That stretch of beach is right in front of the Moana Surfrider in the center of Waikiki. The Department of Health is taking down signs after recent tests no longer showed high levels of bacteria in waters off Waikiki. Update 2/16/17: KHON2 has learned that the Moana Surfrider is under investigation for illegally pumping storm water onto the beach and into the ocean. On Tuesday, Feb. 14, officials reported an increase in enterococci that exceeded water quality standards off Royal Moana Beach. On Thursday, Feb. 16, test results reported much lower levels of the bacteria.

High levels of dangerous bacteria found at Waikiki beach

State health department officials are cautioning swimmers to stay out of the water at Waikiki's Royal Moana Beach after high levels of a dangerous bacteria were detected during a recent test. The department's Clean Water Branch says tests showed higher than acceptable levels of bacteria called enterococci in the area. A similar advisory at Ko Olina last month lasted just one day before health department employees gave the all clear. The bacteria can sometimes cause wound and urinary tract infections. The advisory will remain in effect until water sample results "no longer exceed the recreational water quality standard."

Cottage Grove fined $4,500 by Oregon DEQ for high levels of bacteria in wastewater discharged into river, sprayed onto parkland
COTTAGE GROVE — State environmental regulators have slapped Cottage Grove with $4,500 in fines for discharging excessively contaminated sewage wastewater onto city-owned parkland and into the Coast Fork of the Willamette River last summer. The city uses treated sewage wastewater to irrigate the Middlefield Golf Course, which the city owns. It also found five times in July that samples of treated wastewater the city used to irrigate parkland contained too much bacteria. The city sewage treatment plant is supposed to remove virtually all bacteria before the wastewater is discharged. Wastewater collected there sits in open-air tanks, exposing it to temperature changes in extreme weather, City Manager Richard Meyers said.
