Trump administration relaxes healthy standard for school meals stat : abc2 news

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue traveled to a school in Leesburg, Virginia, to announce that the administration was rolling back some nutrition standards for federally subsidized school meals. Former first lady Michelle Obama had pushed hard for her healthy eating initiative, but some schools complained that the Obama administration standards were too restrictive. Hour after CNN published its findings, White House spokesmen reportedly told the news agency that the program has not changed. The report said that the program would cease operation immediately, but that aspects of the program could continue under another name. Schools won't have to cut the salt in kids' meals just yet.

Trump administration relaxes healthy standard for school meals
Donald Trump's administration is set to relax rules on the nutritional standards of school meals, dismantling legislation Michelle Obama fought hard to introduce during her time as First Lady. The National School Lunch Programme, which provided nutritionally balanced meals to children for free or for a reduced price, was set up under the Obama administration to help tackle childhood obesity. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue was expected to announce a new rule allowing more "regulatory flexibility" in the school lunch programme on Monday at Catoctin Elementary School in Virginia. It also prevented schools from selling snacks high in salt, sugar and fat in cafeterias and vending machines. He was scheduled to eat lunch with students there, along with Senator Pat Roberts, chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.

It is a result of feedback from schools, school nutritional professionals, parents, and other around the issue," Perdue said. Burk said that the Obama nutrition standards on school meal programs were necessary to keep children healthy. The proclamation, which will take effect in the 2017-2018 school year, delays an upcoming requirement to reduce sodium levels in school meals. "This is not reducing nutritional standards whatsoever," he said. It does not affect federal reimbursements for school lunches or funding for meals for at-risk students.
