U.S. pets are getting fatter, according to new report according to : USA TODAY

Banfield Pet Hospital's 2017 State of Pet Health report found that one in three pets who visited Banfield pet facilities in 2016 was overweight or obese. He notes that the report found that the prevalence of overweight pets coincided with an uptick in arthritis and tracheal collapse in dogs. "We know a few things that are really linked with pets becoming overweight, one of which is pets not getting enough exercise, pets eating too much food, and pet owners who really consider pets a part of the family use treats as a form of communication with pets," he said. AdvertisementThe data was compiled from more than three million pets visits from 2016 and shows a 169 percent increase in cat obesity from 10 years ago and a 158 percent increase among dogs.

In that 10-year span, the number of overweight cats has increased by 169 percent while cases of overweight dogs have increased by 158 percent. According to Banfield Pet Hospital's annual State of Pet Health report, about one in three of all dogs and cats they treated in 2016 were overweight. Banfield treated about 2.5 million dogs and 500,000 cats last year, according to its website, meaning approximately 1 million of those animals were overweight. Banfield reports that American cats and dogs have progressively gotten fatter since 2006.
