Coos Bay officials continue investigating high fecal coliform bacteria levels
COOS BAY, Ore. -- Fecal coliform bacteria levels have been the focus of officials in Coos Bay recently. The treatment plant on Fulton Avenue once again had a high count of fecal coliform bacteria, which lives in pathogens found in wastewater. The city is building a new treatment plant to replace the plant on Fulton Avenue. A test last week determined the plant exceeded the monthly required fecal coliform limit. The city announced those levels were back to normal at one of its wastewater treatment plants early last week, but that news changed by the end of the week.

Texas Beach Watch reports that the water near Cole Park and Bob Hall Pier is showing high levels of fecal bacteria. Texas General Land Office's Beach Watch division tests coastal waters across the state for signs of enterococcus (fecal) bacteria. Experts advise that high levels of fecal bacteria can cause illness, particularly for those with weakened immune systems or other risk factors such as age. Under the high advisory level, Texas Beach Watch recommends warning signage be posted at affected sample sites.
