Children Infected With E. Coli in Soy Nut Butter Outbreak
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Two children in Oregon have been infected with E. coli in an outbreak connected to a soy nut butter. A child in Washington state developed kidney failure, according to Bill Marler, a food safety lawyer representing the family. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says eight people have been hospitalized and five have suffered kidney failure. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports (https://goo.gl/9bxKri ) neither sibling in Clackamas County had to be hospitalized, according to Dr. Paul Cieslak, medical director of acute and communicable disease at the Oregon Public Health Division. The outbreak has spread to nine states, affecting 16 people.A seventh person at a school in Northeast Portland have been sickened by E.coli, the Multnomah County Health Department announced Wednesday afternoon. Parents are advised to contact their healthcare provider with any questions regarding your child's healthThe Multnomah County Health Department Communicable Disease Services team can be reached at (503) 988-3406. The Health Department has been advising parents that any child sick with vomiting or diarrhea, should not attend school. Vines says that if people have the recalled product still in their home, they should immediately throw it out or return it to the store where it was purchased. The seven cases at Montessori of Alameda have been under investigation since last week, according to the county.
